Alexandr Isaevich Solzhenitsyn, Russian novelist and historian who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1970, had one amazing life, much of which was caught up in the regime of Josef Stalin. (It's too detailed to go into here but here is a nice bio.)
Part of his contribution to society was his address at Harvard University in 1978. It was a scathing review of life not in Soviet Russia but in the West! Its timelessness and accuracy make it a classic and a must-read for anyone interested in our "free society" and where it went wrong.
